The Experience of Creating Art in A Transpersonal Context

by Michele McCrea MSSc. (Counselling), University of South Australia, School of Psychology
This section is a summary of my Masters' degree research on three women's experiences of artmaking as a way of self-awareness and healing. I completed this phenomenological study in 1997 at the University of South Australia, and it was one of the most fascinating projects I have ever done. I loved the process of interviewing, transcribing, sifting out themes and patterns and then checking back with the participants to make sure I got it right. The results were exciting, showing that artmaking in a supportive transpersonal context really is transformative.

The participants were three of the wonderfully creative and powerful people who participated in the Art is Medicine classes I began leading in 1995. Only one of them was a practising artist.

The menu on the left contains links to aspects of the research process and to a gallery showing some of the images created, mainly in oil pastels.
