Mosaic Creatures on Slateare made from Italian and Mexican smalti on Willunga slate. The Adelaide Rosella, Rainbow Lorikeet, Pobblebonk, Growling Grass Frog, and the Stumpytail or Shingleback Lizard are all native inhabitants of the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia. Each mosaic is made predominantly from smalti (Italian and/or Mexican) on local Willunga slate, and measures about 25 x 18 x 1.5 cm (10 x 6.5 x 0.8 ins.) and weighs about 1.4k (3 pounds). They are fairly durable, having survived all my tests of overnight water immersion, freezing and baking under the Australian midsummer sun. However I cannot guarantee that they are frostproof over long periods, so if you live in a frost-prone area, bring them inside in the winter. December 2009 |
